The European Centre for Heidegger Studies (ECHS) was founded in 2022, by a small group of Heidegger scholars who were dissatisfied with what they perceived as the gradual fading away of Heidegger as a serious topic of study within philosophy departments throughout Europe in the past two decades.
They had three main aims:
To maintain a space where Heidegger’s life and thought could be studied in far greater depth and detail than the pressures of contemporary academia allow for.
To provide lectures and seminars by leading Heidegger Scholars for both academic and lay audiences.
To foster a communal sense of spirit, embodying Heidegger’s ideas of the links between thinking and being, and between building, dwelling, and thinking.
Since then, ECHS has progressed towards these goals with leaps and bounds.
Under the leadership of Alfred Denker and Louise Shale, ECHS has since been providing regular webinars on all aspects of Heidegger’s lifework – from close readings of texts, to lectures placing Heidegger’s thought in the context of the scope of western philosophy as a whole – to a worldwide audience.
In 2025, ECHS marked a milestone with the opening to the public of their Heidegger Archive in Nerja, Southern Spain. This archive is open upon inquiry to all visitors, and is used as a place for in-person events. Longer research stays, are also welcome.
