This webinar is dedicated to the reception of Heidegger’s thinking in the United States, the history of his translations, and the problem of translation. The webinar is based on the correspondence between Hann Arendt and Glenn Gray. Also of interest are Arendt letters with several others on matters Heidegger: an early champion of Jewish-Christian unity and a sort of Sophie Blumenthal, whose attacks on Heidegger elicited a letter of response which is in GA and one of the few places he outright defends himself. There is in the correspondence a lot about the background of Heidegger’s knowledge and understanding of Being and Time, and how it was being presented in English, the visits of Glenn Gray and David Krell. It also contains a lot about how Arendt was feeling about Heidegger in the years 1962-1976, the background of her visits to him, Elfride’s reactions, etc. There are many first-hand reports about Heidegger’s health, comments on America. During the final session we will focus on the problems of translation Heidegger into English.
